There is an exciting update to share regarding our GIS toolkit at the St. Tammany Parish Assessor’s Office. New imagery!
This year we received new aerial imagery from our imagery provider, EagleView. The upgrade in quality from our previous flyover is outstanding. Here’s what was captured this time around:
📏 1-inch resolution for most of the developed areas in the parish
🌾 3-inch resolution for the rural areas, which is a significant upgrade from previous captures
Now comes the fun — and sometimes tricky — part: Deploying new imagery across our suite of mapping tools, including ESRI’s Map Viewer and Field Maps applications for use by our field staff.
For this task, I’m using a Web Map Service (WMS) that was generated when we received the new imagery. Turns out it's surprisingly simple to leverage a WMS as an image service to use as a custom basemap in your Field Maps applications.
How to add your custom imagery basemap in the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer
In Map Viewer, go to “Add” > “Add layer from URL”
Paste the URL of your WMS, select the correct type, and toggle “Use as basemap”
Follow the next prompts and voila: Custom aerials for your field deployments
This year's imagery upgrade should be a huge help in the field and a great asset for planning, inspection, and analysis across our Parish. It’s also available to the public, too, via our online parcel map.
It makes me wonder ...
What else could we do with this new imagery?!? Share your ideas in the comments.
