Data Visualizer Michala Garrison presents three minutes and 37 seconds of celestial zen.
Garrison mapped lightning events detected by the International Space Station between January 2017 and July 2023. The gif above was lifted from the full video on the NASA Scientific Visualization Studio website.
You can watch the stunning creation, in all its glory, here.
Seriously, watch it. Watch the whole thing. You’ll feel better afterward, I promise.
Garrison showed up on my radar at the North American Cartographic Information Society’s annual meeting two weeks ago. Michala presented a different creation during Practical Cartography Day at NACIS, this one a map that shows both the recent 2023 annular and upcoming 2024 total solar eclipses across the United States:
Garrison’s (also stunning) eclipse map can be seen in its entirety here.
